CATS Tour V - Trip Reports - Houston, TX

From Voorhas:
Dec. 30, 2001

Saw CATS for the first time (US tour) a few hours ago (Houston, show started @ 7:30 or 8). I must say, I was just about blown away. It was an amazing performance in every aspect. I was looking to see if any of the audience was dressed up in any cat-like manner, but all I could find was a little girl about seven or so years old with little cat ears on a few rows ahead of me. Then there was the kid getting dragged out literally kicking and screaming during one of Grizabella's parts (if memory serves me right, that is)(Not dressed up, that is...just getting dragged out). Even though I have no past CATS experiences to compare by, I thought Mistoffelees was incredible. Well, the whole cast was great, but there's a few who stand out in my mind now (at 3:30 in the am). In addition to Misto, Cassandra was outstanding & The Tugger lived up to my every expectation. I loved Jennyanydots' performance and was in awe during Grizabella's numbers. Then there was Old Deuteronomy. He was quite a site in the first act and then, much to my amusement, he sat onstage throughout the intermission. Is this the case in every show? I just thought it was kinda "neat" (can't think of the word I want, so that'll have to do). After the show was over and we were leaving (oh, I was in seat S 108) I saw a couple of people onstage taking stuff apart, starting with the "smokestack" used in Skimble's number. At first I thought some fans were vandalizing and stealing a few props for kicks which really rubbed my fur the wrong way, but then I got to thinking and realized they were stagehands just "closing shop". Anyways, I've rambled on enough I guess. Oh, does anybody happen to know for list of the understudies for that showing (Dec. 30 - 7:30 - Jones Hall - Houston)? They were announced at the beginning of the show but I can't seem to remember. Ok. To the cast, great show. Hope you all have a safe & happy new year.
