The longtime Broadway favorite and musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cats, is making it’s debut at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center stage, today through Sunday.

According to Janelle Barnett, Gallagher-Bluedorn marketing director, the pre-show will keep with the theme of the musical. Face painting will be done by cast members and the Humane Society will be present with kittens and cats ready for adoption.

An adaptation of T.S. Eliot’s poetry, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the musical became an unexpected international success when introduced on the New London Theatre in 1981. Then in 1982, the musical became the most highly flaunted foreign musical ever to hit Broadway.

Cats enjoyed a record-setting 18-year run on Broadway before its final bow in 2000. Now, thanks to the Rogers and Hammerstein Theatre Library, it is presented through special arrangement for all to see. Cats has been traveling across the United States for more than a year and has continued to break box-office records.

“Cats is pretty timeless,” Barnett said. “[It] is something that everyone should see.”

Webber is one of the most popular musical writers of today. According to www.grovemusic.com, Webber, by creating what is known as the “mega-musicals,” has been responsible for the cultural and commercial profile of the musical worldwide through the 1980s and 90s. Among these musicals are, of course, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Phantom of the Opera.

According to Barnett, all five shows are expected to sell out, although tickets are still available. Ticket prices range from $26.40 to $45 For more information, call 273-SHOW.
