Chapter 8:

Many of the Jellicles who had been sitting quickly stood up in surprise. Munkstrap narrowed his eyes and placed himself between Cockalorum and his leader. Ever since the tom left to follow Macavity, he didn't trust him one bit. Especially now. Why was Macavity actually offering information? Even though the information was beneficial to both the tribe and himself, somehow Munkustrap suspected there must be a reason other than that for Macavity to come forward with the information.

Deuteronomy touched Munkustrap on the arm and inticated for him to move to the side. He looked Cockalorum in the eyes and spoke softly. "Who is it?" He knew that Macavity was ready to challenge his authority, but couldn't because the other Jellicle's would never accept him as their leader. Cus Cus, Cockalorum, and Porpentine all felt the same way that Macavity did as well, and that is why they followed him when he left.

So, it was no surprise when Cockalorum gave no respect to his elder as he answered. "You think I'd tell you? Just like that?" He paused and took only a minute step back as both Alonzo and Munkstrap stepped forward with angry faces. "If it were up to me, I wouldn't tell you a thing, but because Macavity ordered me to do so, I'll tell you. It's Raymond Hughes, the Leader of the Opposition." Silence fell on the Jellicles as they took this information in. Raymond Hughes was a very strong political figure and many tended to follow what he said. Not only was he a respected person within England, he was well-respected all over the world! How were they to fight him?

"Why is he against us so much?" The voice belonged to Tugger. He turned and faced the other tom with his arms crossed in front of him. "And how did Macavity find this out?" His eyes accused the tom. Even though he generally prefered to flirt with the queens, he can be quite serious at times. This was one of them.

Cockalorum just shrugged his shoulders. "I didn't ask." He turned to leave the room, but paused at the door and faced the crowd again. "Oh, this bit of information wasn't free." He scanned the faces until his gaze came to rest on Demeter. "Macavity expects payback." The tom then turned and left the room.

Lloyd watched the door close and then glanced at the golden tabby. The poor queen had paled a bit, but still seemed to be taking it fairly well. "I'll go talk to Nathan and let him know what we found out." He placed a hand on Deuteronomy's shoulder before he left the room. Had he done the right thing in introducing them to the world? So much had gone on...so many varying opinions. There were people who thought the Jellicles were less than human and should be treated as animals only. There were conservative religious factions who insisted that they were demons. The Evolutionists are trying to figure out how they evolved from cats. Scientists wonder if they could clone them. Many people don't understand the Jellicles and so fear them when they really needn't fear any of the Jellicles...well..with the exception of Macavity. His footsteps echoed throughout the abandoned hallway as he made his way outside pondering on what they could do to gain the Jellicle's freedom.

Two weeks later...

Deuteronomy stood before the video camera in an abandoned office they had never visited before. Lloyd and Nathan had sneaked him in there by dressing him up in clothes and covering his head with a hooded coat. Deuts tail had to be tied up against his back in order for him to fit in the binding clothing. Once in the office, Deut was glad to be rid of the uncomfortable outfit and let his tail loose. The video was Lloyd's idea. Their best bet that they could think of at the moment was to record for all to see what the Jellicle's were like. It was decided to record Deut because he didn't look fierce, and because he was the leader.

With the camera rolling Deut spoke in a gentle, but strong voice describing some of the cathumans and telling about how the Jellicles only want to live peaceably among the humans. They know they are different, but there was nothing more to fear from them as there was to fear their own selves.

"Please keep in mind that we only ask for your respect. Perhaps you can try and learn a bit about us before making your judgements. Yet, because we fear for our safety right now, we will be cautious around you. Before we can treat you as a friend, a little time is needed to gain our trust due to the way we have been treated by some of you. The same is true for you in that we realize time is needed for us to gain your trust as well.

"Just remember, as you can see from what I've described of ourselves earlier, we are just like you. And, just like you, we have found that humans are quite varied in personalities. For some are good, and some are bad. We both work and play. We all have habits and homes. We try just to live out our lives day by day without any troubles. So do humans. We have familes. So do humans. We have friends....and enemies....so do humans. Do either of us really need any more enemies?

"Jellices are faithful and true to those who give us a chance. We want to give you a chance. Will you let us?"

The recording light turned off and Nathan looked at Deut and then Lloyd. "I'll send this to my reporter friend and I'm sure she'll love to be able to get the scoop on this." He paused and looked back to Deuteronomy. "I can't guarrantee that this will make a difference if it even is aired."

Deut nodded his head. "At least we tried, That is the best we could do." Deut then donned the clothing once more and he and Lloyd returned to the junkyard as Nathan went to meet his reporter friend.

This is the end of the fic...what happens after this will be determined in the RPG.
