Chapter 4:

It looked almost human...but it was as if the creature was part animal. His best guess was that it was part cat. Lloyd reached up a hand and began to touch it, but stopped. How long had this creature been sleeping here? What was it? Was it even from this planet? Was it a mutant? He hadn't a clue. Lloyd stepped back and glanced around the room. These symbols and writings have to say something about who this is and why it is here!

He returned to the first room and retrieved his sack. He then went back into the room and set the torch down once more, glancing every minute or so in the direction of the creature. In no way was he going to drop his guard just in case that thing woke up! After setting his sack down once more inside the second room, he set about to examining the hyroglyphics once more.

It was hours later when he decided to take a break. The day must be nearly done by now. He decided to return to his little camp on the beach and headed out. As he suspected, the sun was starting to set. Lloyd returned tohis camp and settled in for the night. But it turned out that he didn't get as much sleep as he thought he would.

Sometime during the night he woke up breathing hard, his eyes wide. He looked around him frantically, but saw no one. What had he dreamt about to result in such a strong reaction from him? He forced his mind to concntrate on the fading memory of the dream he had had. Nothing. Well, nothing that made sense. All he could recall was that of a cat leaping up on something tall, and then a human figure sitting up. It didn't make sense. Why would he wake up feeling this way from a dream that was just that? Lloyd never did get back to sleep that night.

The next few days were spent in studying the rooms, the skeleton, the creature, and the hyroglyphics. It was an exhausting task, but one that kept him from boredom all alone on this island. The task was also frustrating as he hadn't been able to really decipher much about it. His notebook was now full of copies of the writings on the walls and he had to use a stick in the dirt outside the cave to make more temporary notes to himself. The skeleton didn't really divulge much more information, and he was always in wonder at how the creature in the second room was able to remain alive and asleep for so long without waking up. He began to wonder if there was something magical about this cave after all. Or, perhaps the creature was made to sleep for extremely long periods?

Lloyd even thought about trying to wake it up. After examining the creature, he determined that it most resembled a mix of human and feline. It had long fur and a tail. It's hands and feet slightly resembled claws. And Lloyd determined that it must be a male of it's species. He had stepped up to the creature and for the first time, spoke. "Excuse me.." He had to clear his throat. It had been a number of days since he had used his voice and it came out almost as a half-whisper. "Hello? Sir? Wake up...please?" He stepped back caustiously, but nothing happened. The creature didn't wake up. Lloyd moved once more and touched it's arm. The fur was soft to his touch and the body was warm. But still, no movement.

Lloyd returned to his notebook and the small fire he kept burning to keep the room warm and for him to cook on occasionally. He sat down once more tried once again to make sense of the writings. It was obviously a different language. He thought he may have been able to figure it out once or twice, but he just wasn't sure, and it didn't seem to follow through with his theories. With a sigh, he leaned against the wall and looked up. There were writings on the ceiling as well. One or two looked familiar. "Kurna, Kurna, Kurna, ep la Haahisti Lehr. Oo na Jeenico Maal." Lloyd sighed again. Why attempt to speak something you have no idea what it says, nor if you are even speaking the right words or even the correct pronunciations or anything like that? He was too tired right now to think clearly. He'll just take a nap and start again with a fresh mind. He closed his eyes and fell into a light sleep unaware that there was a slight movement on the table in front of him.

A noise woke him up and he quickly opened his eyes to stare right into the eyes of the creature! It was awake! Lloyd saw the fur on it's arms rise and it had opened it's mouth as if to...hiss? His earlier theory that it might be part cat seemed to fit. He spoke in a soft tone, not wanting to startle it....or give it any reason to attack him! "I'm a friend. I mean you no harm." His heart pounded as he watched the creatures reaction as though it didn't understand him. Of course it didn't! He thought to himself and bereated himself for thinking otherwise.

Then the creature spoke. "Keerrma te jupr tralsa?" It's tail waved back and forth in warning and Lloyd wasn't about to move any closer. But an idea struck him and he remembered one thing that was a universal language! Food! Slowly, he moved towards his sackcloth and took out some dried fish. He put it on a makeshift plate and held it over the fire. The creature watched him warily until it began to sniff the air. Lloyd knew that the creature was hungry as a growling sound was heard from the vicinity of it's stomache. He put the cooked fish on a flat rock that he had cleaned off of dust earlier and testing his own nerve, he moved ever-so-slowly forward. When it bared it's teeth, he stopped moving forward and just set the food down and pushed it within reach of the creture, but made sure he wasn't within reach ot it. He moved back a little faster than he approached, but not too fast so as not to spook it. After a long moment of staring at each other, the creature finally reached out and began to eat the fish.
